Hoxsey Dietary Guidelines:

It’s especially important that you completely avoid pork, vinegar, alcohol, tomatoes of any kind, bleached and refined flour, refined salt, and white refined sugar. These foods interfere with the Hoxsey Tonic and can inactivate it or render it less effective. Even ‘cheating’ a little can cause the Hoxsey Tonic to stop working for days.

Pork – Avoid Completely: That’s pretty easy to spot and therefore avoid.

Vinegar – Avoid Completely: This one is a bit trickier. When we started on the diet I was shocked at how many foods have vinegar in them! There are the obvious ones like salad dressing, mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup. I hadn’t realized that vinegar was used in so many different brands of bread. Some labels list vinegar as acetic acid instead of vinegar, so make sure you watch out for that.

We have found some alternatives - and developed some of our own. In either case they are available in our recipes page.

Alcohol – Avoid Completely: This one seems like it would be easy to spot, and for the most part it is. However, you’ll want to make sure you’re not using any Vanilla Extract, or any kind of extract, that contains alcohol. Also, be aware that many medicines (cough syrup, Homeopathic meds) have small amounts of alcohol in them.

Tomatoes of any kind – Avoid Completely: Tomatoes are pretty easy to spot. Make sure you double check your spices and verify there aren’t any dried/powdered tomatoes or tomato pieces in them. Another thing to watch for is dried or powdered tomato in rice mixes.

Bleached/Processed Flour – Avoid Completely: You’ll need to avoid all breads, pastas, and white rice that are enriched, bleached or refined.

Refined Salt – Avoid Completely: We all need salt for normal cell functions. The problem is that processed foods are loaded with it. We end up eating too much of it. Even natural foods have a high salt content. You need to avoid regular salt and salt substitutes.
It’s recommended that you avoid adding salt to your food at the table and when you cook use just enough sea salt to enhance the flavor of the dish. You can also use kelp or herbal seasonings. Limit your total salt (sea salt, kelp) to ½ teaspoon a day.

White Refined Sugar – Avoid Completely: Sugar is another mineral that we need to promote normal cell functions. Everything we eat is eventually turned into glucose so our cells can utilize it. The problem is that the processed foods we eat are loaded with refined sugar. Candy bars, sodas, our specialty coffee in the morning, and the cake at the office, not to mention the crazy amount that is added to fast food. Because the sugar used is refined it is absorbed into your body very quickly. That quick absorption causes a surge in your blood sugar levels that is especially dangerous if you have cancer, diabetes, or hypoglycemia. Avoid artificial sweeteners like nutrasweet, saccharine or Splenda. Avoid carbonated beverages completely. Hint: just because it’s organic doesn’t mean it’s raw! Make sure you only use raw sugar.

The healthy (allowed) alternatives are Honey, Molasses, Maple Syrup, Raw Sugar, Turbinado Sugar, Stevia, Fructose, and Xylitol.
